28: There Might Be a Tsunami

Knowing how we work can be as important as any other factor on the job, but imagining how much time our work might take can be, well, hard. Because psychology.

The team explores the topic of estimation this week, leading Caitie and Max to tackle everything from Parkinson's Law and deadlines to mythical "summer projects" and that mad dash to clean the house before your mother drops in.

Tasks may expand to fill the time we give them, but surely we can use this knowledge to our advantage. Or maybe we should just know that the time required for a project might always be... unknown. You know?

The PERT Formula to Estimating Time Required:

[Optimistic Estimate + (4 X Most-Likely Estimate) + Pessimistic Estimate] / 6
